The authors of this volume examine the perception, depiction, and evaluation of the antagonist in ancient Jewish and early Christian literature. Most of the contributions were presented at an international symposium on the topic of "Gegenspieler" in Tübingen in October 2015.

Mithin hat sich die Entstehung einiger dieser Texte der Auseinandersetzung mit Gegnern erst zu verdanken. Inwiefern wurden solche gegnerische Gruppen oder Gestalten von den Autoren explizit oder implizit als Irrlehrer, Abtrünnige oder Kontrahenten wahrgenommen? Wo verliefen die Konfliktlinien innerhalb oder außerhalb der jeweiligen sozialen, kulturellen oder religiösen Gemeinschaft? Wie gestalteten sich die apologetisch motivierte Darstellung der Antagonisten und die gegen sie gerichtete Argumentation? Diesen Fragen geht der vorliegende Band aus alt- und neutestamentlicher sowie kirchengeschichtlicher Perspektive nach.
