Level of compliance - one of the most important prerequisites of good governance - varies widely across countries of the Global North and the less developed, Global South. Acts of non-compliance, such as electoral irregularities, dubious deals between private and public sectors, questionable role of the justice systems and financial scandals, though they vary greatly across countries, are an omnipresent reality of contemporary life. This volume has brought together a number of case studies of such deviant behavior in political, juridical and corporate fields, from several countries of Asia, Europe and South America, within a common framework. Instead of a moral approach based exclusively on the legality and illegality of the act, the authors of these essays dissect non-compliance analytically, taking culture and context into account. They argue that, while criminal and corrupt dealings deserve to be exposed by all means from an ethical point of view, seen from an interdisciplinary angle, one needs to probe deeper into the dynamic that leads to such non-compliance with the law in the first place.

This book presents the results of an international comparative study on the causes of rule deviation in business and medical organizations. Based on document and interview analyses as well as experiments, the discrepancy between (state) regulations and organizational practice is elaborated and discussed in an interdisciplinary perspective. On the basis of the distinction between organizational and individual deviance, it could be shown across national boundaries that the unwritten rules of the organization make a decisive contribution in explaining organizational wrongdoing, as well as their containment. Implications for effective prevention derived from this are also pointed out.

Is a new spirit of capitalism emerging as a result of neoliberal adjustments in the global economy? The internationalization of management and its comprehensive neoliberals imprint fall short of the assumptions represented by globalization theory. Empirical data on the life trajectories and action orientations of CEOs from leading industrial companies in nine countries across Europe, Asia, and Latin America indicate that local institutional frameworks, diverse regional challenges, and historically embedded cultural influences exert more significant influence than global trends. Different strategies and structures have been identified based on problem-centered interviews with top executives, and they are made accessible for the first time in English for comparative purposes.

This open access book examines the interplay between public and private sectors in Latin America's biggest market. It is the result of the binational research project “Organizational Crime and Systemic Corruption in Brazil” funded by the DFG and FAPESP (2018-2023). Its contributions analyze anticorruption, political finance, and how for-profit organizations manage illegality.

Das Buch beschäftigt sich empirisch mit der aus der Globalisierungstheorie stammenden These der globalen ökonomischen Elite und der damit verbundenen These der neoliberalen Konvergenz. Theoretisch knüpft das Buch an am Begriff des Geist bzw. neuen Geist des Kapitalismus, führt die Forschungsperspektive aber weiter, indem habitualisierte, kollektive Wissensbestände als dessen Konstitutionsmerkmale zu Grunde gelegt und empirisch untersucht werden. Das Buch bietet auf Basis von insbesondere im qualitativen Schritt exklusivem Material Einsichten in die „Anatomie einer Elite“. Wenn in diesem Buch von ökonomischen Eliten gesprochen wird, dann folgen die Ausführungen keinem substanziellen Elitenverständnis, sondern einem Positionsansatz. Gemeint sind damit Personen, die Spitzenpositionen in wichtigen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen, wie jenem der Ökonomie, besetzen. Weil die „Weltklasse“ der Spitzenmanager von Großunternehmen im Diskurs als die Trägerschicht einer neoliberalen Unternehmens- und Mitarbeiterführung gilt, wurden zwei Generationen von Top-Managern, welche die Spitzenpositionen in den 100 größten deutschen Industrieunternehmen besetzt haben, in den Blick genommen. Mit Hilfe von Karriereverlaufsanalysen, Interviews und auto-/biographischem Material wurden die beiden verbundenen Thesen der globalen Elite und neoliberalen Konvergenz empirisch auf den Prüfstand gestellt.
