Julian Schnabel – On the Day Cy Died

Daniel Kehlmann writes in the exhibition catalogue:
""Black paintings" are what the pinturas negras by Goya bring to mind, an entirely
monochrome cycle - nothing is just black and white, says a popular expression, but
in fact, these paintings are."

On display are five large paintings dedicated to Cy Twombly, the great American painter who died 10 years ago on 5 July in Rome. Julian Schnabel had a long-standing friendship for many years.
Cy Twombly moved his main residence to Italy early on (at the end of the 1950s).
He was inspired by Italian antiquity and European poetry. Moving to Europe was an unusual step for his an unusual step for his generation.
