It is the Handbook of Old Testament Anthropology's objective to summarize the current state of research on the portrayal of humans in the Old Testament, to develop this further through new perspectives and interdisciplinary aspects and to make this available in the compact form of a handbook.

In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten wurde die Anthropologie des Alten Testaments nicht nur als alttestamentlich-theologisches, sondern auch als interdisziplinäres Forschungsthema neu entdeckt und durch eine Vielzahl von Beiträgen vorangetrieben. Im gleichen Zeitraum hat sich auch in der Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaft, in der Ethnologie, in der Philosophie sowie in der Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaft die Anthropologie als ein übergreifendes Forschungsparadigma etabliert.
