Petra Götzen was born in Bremerhaven, Germany. She has a Bachelor Degree in Management Information Systems and a Master Degree in Teaching. She moved to the USA in 1998 where she got diagnosed with cancer. During the remission period she completed her Master Degree and worked as a teacher. She returned to Germany in the year of 2008 and got employed at an International School as a teacher and German Department Team Leader as well as was involved in the language learning council committee which reviewed, evaluated, and finalized the effectiveness of the German immersion program/Integrated German and the English as a Second Language Program.

Einen geliebten Menschen durch eine Demenzerkrankung zu begleiten, ist unglaublich schwer – vor allem für diejenigen, die der betroffenen Person nahestehen. Was mich besonders bewegt hat, war die Erkenntnis, dass der Mensch mit Demenz – sobald die Diagnose gestellt ist und die Krankheit bereits fortgeschritten ist – meist stiller wird und sich weniger mitteilt.

Watching a loved one go through dementia is incredibly difficult—especially for those who are close to the person affected. What struck me deeply is that, by the time the diagnosis is made and the disease has already progressed, the person with dementia often grows quieter about what’s happening.
