Die Revolution von 1848/49 brachte Europa in Bewegung. Während politische Kräfte über eine Zukunft stritten, in deren Mittelpunkt ein starker Nationalstaat stehen sollte, entstand etwa zeitgleich eine neue europäische Infrastruktur: Eisenbahnen beförderten Menschen und Güter, Telegrafennetze übermittelten Nachrichten, ohne an nationalen Grenzen halt zu machen.
