Crime and Punishment
Rodion Raskolnikov is young, poor... and ambitious. He is convinced of the idea that "big people" must take what is rightfully theirs and that this distinguishes them from the "little people". They are even allowed to destroy "life unworthy of life". He argues with commanders like Napoleon: if they leave the field as victors, history remembers their great deeds and not the many thousands of murders that went along with them. When, with this thought in his heart, he kills an old usurper and her sister, however, he realizes that the human psyche does not readily embrace this tangled logic. Gröls Classics - English Edition

Mosses from an Old Manse
From 1842 to 1845, Nathaniel Hawthorne lives with his newlywed wife, the painter Sophia Peabody, in the old rectory in Concord, Massachusetts. For him, it's a paradise of little things. But then the couple has to leave the house because rent debts have piled up. Nevertheless, the writer will think back on this time as a happy one for the rest of his life. In 1846, "Mosses from an old Manse" is published. An autobiographical essay in which Hawthorne once again takes himself back to the place where he led a relatively carefree, liberated life. The Scarlet Letter
Filmed many times, this American depth psychological guilt and atonement novella is a classic of American literature. Adulteress Esther Prynne wears the scarlet letter A for Adultery like a badge of honor. In the puritanical environment of Boston's Pilgrim Fathers in 1640, sexual debauchery is absolutely frowned upon. Nathaniel Hawthorne himself came from an old Puritan family. His grandfather was one of the judges at the Salem witch trials. He achieved world fame with "The Scarlet Letter". Gröls Classics - English Edition

The Prince
The Prince is considered one of the first works of modern political philosophy. It formulates the modern principles of the raison d'état, detached from moral and religious ideas. Together with the Discorsi, which were written at the same time, it represents Macchiavelli's main work. From it derives both the concept of Machiavellianism and that of anti-Machiavellianism. The author is interested above all in one timeless question: "How can one be successful in a hostile political environment, namely acquire power, maintain it and increase it to greatness? Beyond Good and Evil
Beyond good and evil was the thinking in prehistoric times, when actions were judged by their effect. Morality came only when actions were judged by their intention. Nietzsche's demand was to return to the perspective of pre-moral times. He sought a morality beyond existing norms and values, not bound by historical tradition influenced by religion. His counter design is a new kind of philosophy of "immorality", which is bound to the respective perspectives of man. Gröls Classics - English Edition

Frankenstein
"Great God! His yellowish skin was barely enough to cover the mesh of muscles and veins; his hair was shiny black and long; his teeth like pearls. But all this only made all the more striking a contrast to the watery eyes that barely stood out from the sockets, the wrinkled skin, and the blackish, narrow lips." The Gothic novel has had a major impact on literature and popular culture and is one of the best-known representatives of the horror genre. In 2015, 82 international literary critics and scholars chose it as one of the most important British novels Gröls Classics - English Edition

Dracula
The central character, Count Dracula, is the most famous vampire in the history of literature. In creating the character, Stoker is said to have been inspired by Vlad III Drăculea. Eleanor of Schwarzenberg of Bohemia may also have served as inspiration for Stoker's novel, as she was seen as a vampire by the people. However, there is no evidence for this legend, nor are there any corresponding passages in Stoker's notes. A possible source of inspiration for Stoker could also have been the noblewoman Elisabeth Báthory, a convicted serial killer, known as the "Blood Countess". Gröls Classics - English Edition

The Importance of Being Earnest
In this comedy Algernon Moncrieff and John Worthing live in Victorian England. Worthing resides in the country and travels to London every now and then for pleasure. Every time he does so, he tells those around him that he is taking care of his irresponsible brother Ernst. But it is he who pretends to be Ernst in London in order to pursue his pleasure undetected. Moncrieff is a London aristocrat who from time to time escapes from London society by pretending to visit his sick friend Bunbury in the country, who, however, is also an invention.
