Built as the first Christian showpiece, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore graces Rome’s highest promontory, the Esquiline Hill. The Basilica defies the bishop of Constantinople, Nestorius, who had publicly expressed doubts about the divinity of the man Jesus.
