This book is a theoretical inquiry on the relation of the body politic with the religious movements in the time between the Constitutional Revolution and the Islamic Revolution in Iran; it illustrates speculative and historical analyses on the relationship of state, religion, and socio-political status in the late Qajar dynasty (1905-1925) and the whole Pahlavi monarchy. Particularly, it examines the applicability of “liberal conservatism” to the era of the last Shah of Iran. The thesis defines the term political conservatism in accord with Edmund Burke’s philosophy. It deals next with the definition of religious reformation, the peculiar characteristics of Islam, the Shi'ite political theology, and the contradictory usages of “Islamic reformation” in the literature. The text gives an overview of the two antagonist sides of nationalism. It provides also an analysis of the Islamic Republic as a new political phenomenon in Iranian history and the transformation of all concepts after 1979. Ayatollahi aims to assess the Iranian conservatism, the possibility of conciliation between politics and religion before the collapse of the Pahlavi, and “the conditions of possibility” for any restoration of the monarchy.

Scholarship on artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) has often portrayed mining regions as ‘informal’ zones that suffer from environmental degradation problems. Water pollution and degraded landscapes, for example, have long been noted as the inevitable consequence of the operations of ASM. Such insistence on the institutional absences of ASM zones has dovetailed with a lack of academic attention to some of the ‘golden’ mining practices taking place there. Thus, this work seeks to (re)examine the topic of ‘development’ in ASM. The findings suggest that small-scale miners, contrary to popular perception, could be caretakers of the environment. In addition, emphasizing how the dynamic interplay between resources and environmental demands may come to support public policy, the findings illustrate, contrary to the dominant narrative, how the activities of small-scale mining operators can engender a win-win situation for both mining companies and local mining communities.

Die Bedingungen des Aufwachsens im Migrationskontext sind in Deutschland sowohl in Wissenschaft als auch in der Praxis durch eine ethnozentrische Außensicht geprägt. Daher ist die Bewertung familiärer Verbundenheit, sozialer Mobilität, sozialräumlicher Realität und muslimischer Religiosität kritisch zu hinterfragen. Der Band untersucht die familiäre Verbundenheit als begründete Reaktion auf die Lebenswirklichkeit von Migrationsfamilien, die soziale Mobilität vom „Bildungsaufstieg“ isoliert und ihr die transnational aufgespannte familiäre Anerkennungsstruktur entgegenhält. Enttarnt wird die sozialräumliche Segregation als konstruierte Wirklichkeit. Dieser Konstruktion setzt die Autorin durch ein „Doing-Plural-Communities“ ein Konzept der gelebten Diversität entgegen.

This book takes an interest in the collapse and formation of the state and is primarily concerned with exploring and comparing the emergence of Kosovo and South Sudan. It contends that both have emerged in the stateness problem experienced by Serbia and Sudan. It demonstrates that the collection of the following three variables has determined their emergence:

How do white people handle their own dominance while striving for racial reconciliation in a concrete church context in Cape Town? Persisting effects of colonialism present a challenge to reconciliation efforts in settler-colonial societies. This book draws particular attention to the coloniality of knowledge in multicultural churches and denominations. Despite its ability to connect, English is here regarded as an obstacle to deeper cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.

The findings of this ethnographic study reveal how – motivated by a ‘Hope for transformation from within’ – racial integration often took precedence over equity. Eurocentric leanings were found to be both acknowledged and downplayed. With the emphasis on inclusion and upliftment, the equally sought-after cultural diversity was limited by the inadvertent setting up of boundaries, particularly regarding language and theology.

„Afrika“ dient in vielen haarpolitischen Debatten nur als positive und teilweise sehr unpräzise definierte Projektionsfläche, die für eine bessere vorkoloniale Schwarze Welt steht. Nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit wurde bisher darauf verwendet, die tatsächlich gegenwärtig gelebte Haarkultur- und -politik in verschiedenen kontinentalafrikanischen Kontexten auch auf ihr Eingebettet-Sein in globale, historisch gewachsene Hierarchien hin zu betrachten. Oft wird übersehen, dass auch hier – auf ihre eigene Weise – rassistische Ideologien und insbesondere weiße Vorherrschaft als koloniale Kontinuitäten wirken, und zeitgenössische Haarkultur mitprägen. Die vorliegende Arbeit möchte einen Beitrag dazu leisten, diese Dynamiken besser zu verstehen. Dabei werden jedoch auch relevante Facetten Schwarzen Selbstverständnisses und gelebte ästhetische Praktiken beleuchtet, die über die Auseinandersetzung mit weißer Vorherrschaft hinausweisen.

This book engages with the implications of an expanding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of Transnational Corporations in their supply chains. Taking the case of a cocoa sustainability certification project in Ghana, the study examines the implementation process of such a transnational CSR intervention and its outcomes regarding the local governance and institutional environment of the cocoa sector in Ghana. The study deploys a theoretical framework based on Global Value Chain Analysis and a neo-Gramscian approach to Global Governance to assess transnational CSR as a concept and strategy that reflect power struggles in global production fields.

Spätestens seit der ausgerufenen „Zeitenwende“ muss Sicherheitspolitik nicht nur neu, sondern auch anders gedacht werden. Der Dreiklang von Sicherheit, die Frieden schafft und Entwicklung ermöglicht, ist nicht mehr im Sinne von humanitären Interventionen zu denken, sondern in einem unübersichtlichen und mannigfaltigen politischen Umfeld neu zu verorten. Dieses Buch leistet einen Diskussionsbeitrag zu den Herausforderungen, Zielen und Konflikten in diesen interdependenten Politikfeldern. Die unterschiedlichen Perspektiven aus Sicht der Friedens-, Sicherheits- und Entwicklungspolitik werden durch Fallbeispiele illustriert.
