Emotionen tragen wesentlich zur Profilierung von Gottes- und Menschenbildern biblischer Texte und ihrer Rezeption bei. Werden mehrere Emotionen genannt, treten sie miteinander in Beziehung und erzeugen Entsprechungen, Gegensätze, aber auch Ambivalenzen. Der Sammelband widmet sich menschlichen wie göttlichen Emotionen, die solche Spannungsfelder erzeugen. In der Hebräischen Bibel lässt sich dies bei Jeremia beobachten, aber auch bei den Protagonisten im Jonabuch. Im hellenistischen Judentum ist Philos Umgang mit Emotionen und der Eifer der Zeloten von Interesse. Bei den neutestamentlichen Texten wird das Verhältnis von göttlichem und menschlichem Zorn und Barmherzigkeit untersucht, das urchristliche Liebesethos sowie die paulinischen Peristasenkataloge. Für die frühchristlichen Apokryphen stehen der Zorn im Kindheitsevangelium nach Thomas und Polaritäten in den Pseudoklementinischen Homilien im Zentrum. Bei den Wüstenvätern werden die ambivalente Wertung des Zorns und seine Bewältigung behandelt.

The material culture of Colossae is here for the first time given as full a collation as possible to the present day. 38 inscriptions, 88 coins and 49 testimonia are brought together in the context of a thorough overview of the site of Colossae. These include evidence that has been thought lost or has been overlooked or misinterpreted or has only recently been discovered.
New readings, insights and analyses of the material evidence are brought into a highly creative exchange with the two letters of the Second Testament connected with the site. The texts thereby become additional evidence for an appreciation of the life of a city in the first two centuries of the Common Era.
The fullest collation of evidence for the ancient Phrygian city in the Greco-Roman period was the coin catalogue assembled by Hans von Aulock (1987). The most recent catalogue of the inscriptions of Colossae was published by William Calder and William Buckler in 1939. There has never been a full inventory of ancient writings that bear witness to the site. Alan H. Cadwallader in his volume not only updates this material by subjecting it to thorough, critical analysis in the light of comparative evidence from across the Roman province of Asia and the Mediterranean world. New discoveries from the site and from museums and collections in the United Kingdom, Europe, Russia, Australia and the United States are introduced. Into this assemblage and interpretation are brought the letters to the Colossians and Philemon in the Second Testament writings of the Christian Church. For the first time, the letters are released to be players in the highly competitive environment of a city negotiating its way in the new realities of imperial Rome. Here the letters and their recipients become participants in the society of the day, contributing, critiquing and struggling to forge an identity for the Christ followers within that world. Echoes of the gymnasium, gladiatorial spectacles, cosmological speculations, religious devotion and sanction, family structures, commerce and industry, struggles for justice, intercity competition and legal negotiations are found in the letters, echoes that witness to their participation in the life of Colossae. This is a radical new approach, incorporating the turn to material culture as the embedding of literature and its consumers rather than an embellishing backdrop.

Hanna Mehring erforscht die Königsmotivik im Johannesevangelium und untersucht ihre Funktion im Gesamtkontext der johanneischen Jesus-Vita. Sie geht der Frage nach, ob und wie Jesus als idealer König literarisch inszeniert wird. An den zentralen Achsenstellen des Evangeliums wird Jesus als König bekannt: in Joh 1,35–51 durch den (späteren) Schüler Nathanael, in 6,1–21 durch das Volk nach der wunderbaren Brotvermehrung, in 12,12–19 beim Einzug Jesu nach Jerusalem und in 18,18–19,16 im Rahmen des Verhörs durch den römischen Statthalter Pilatus.
Das Novum besteht darin, die differenzierte Erfassung der Christologie im Johannesevangelium mittels der motivgeschichtlichen Ausrichtung auf das hellenistisch-römische Herrscherideal als Vergleichspunkt für den König Jesus zu leisten. Mehrings Werk ist daher als ein Beitrag zur Erschließung der christologischen Konzeption des Johannesevangeliums einzuordnen.
Das Auftreten des idealen hellenistischen Königs Jesus im narrativen Verlauf der johanneischen Jesus-Vita kann – so Mehring – zudem im Zusammenhang mit dem sich dort spiegelnden Konflikt der Jesus-Gruppe mit „den Juden“ gelesen und auf seine Wirkungsabsicht hin befragt werden.

The early Christian movement known as “Montanism” referred to itself as the “New Prophecy”. This collected volume, featuring contributions from the first-ever symposium on the New Prophecy, examines the origins of the Phrygian New Prophecy during the pandemic under Marcus Aurelius, its debated presence in North Africa and its relation to Tertullian, its relationship with mainstream Christians in Asia, its female leaders, and its echoes in the writings of Lucian of Samosata, Celsus, Origen, Eusebius, Epiphanius, and Honorius’s legislation. The book concludes with a systematic-theological reflection for today’s churches and William Tabbernee’s bibliography.

Der Sammelband umfasst 28 der jüngeren exegetisch- neutestamentlichen Studien Michael Bachmanns, die es durchweg mit christlich-jüdischen Momenten zu tun haben. Der vorangestellte „Überblick“ stellt die Beiträge knapp vor und weist zugleich darauf hin, dass sich (dem Autor) da nicht selten einigermaßen neue Perspektiven aufdräng(t)en. Das betrifft nicht nur die Paulusexegese („The New Perspective on Paul“) – und den paulinischen Ausdruck „Werke des Gesetzes“ (z.B. Röm 3,28) –, vielmehr beispielsweise auch die sog. Antithesen der Bergpredigt, das lukanische Werk, das Johannesevangelium und das Apokalypse-Buch. Vor allem der (synchrone) Blick auf die frühchristlichen Texte selbst legt nämlich nahe, dass eben von ihnen her antijudaistische Auslegungsgewohnheiten überwunden werden müssen. Für den Protestantismus wird man (mit G. Theißen) von der Notwendigkeit einer „Entlutheranisierung“ zu sprechen haben, indes auch von ökumenischen Chancen – gegenüber gern als „werkgerecht“ eingeschätzten Gemeinschaften.
