Hydrogen Production from Seawater Electrolysis

This brief provides an in-depth exploration of seawater splitting electrocatalysts, emphasizing critical challenges such as sustaining high current density, achieving oxygen evolution reaction (OER) selectivity, and utilizing earth-abundant materials. It offers insights into the current landscape of seawater electrolyzer technologies and emerging alternatives. The book also discusses rational design approaches aimed at developing highly active and stable electrocatalysts capable of industrial-scale current densities without degradation, with a focus on achieving selective oxygen evolution over chlorine evolution. Recent advancements in seawater electrocatalysts, including transition metal oxides, nitrides, sulfides, phosphides, and carbides, are examined. Additionally, it highlights promising strategies for electrocatalyst and electrolyzer design, as well as unconventional operating parameters. making it a valuable resource for graduates and researchers active in the fields of electrocatalysis and green technologies.

Über den Autor

Dr. Z.K. Ghouri is a VC’s Research Fellow in the NZIIC at Teesside University and Assistant Professor in the ICCBS at the University of Karachi. Before joining TU, he was Research Scientist in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University at Qatar. Dr. Ghouri is endorsed by the Royal Academy of Engineering as a Global Talent. His research interests can be divided into two focus areas, namely, 1) Synthesis of metallic nanoparticles decorated carbon nanostructures (nanofibers, nanotubes, or graphene) for neutral/alkaline seawater electrolysis and fuel cells, and 2) nanofabrication and characterization of novel pure organic (polymeric)/inorganic (ceramics) and composite materials for energy and environmental applications. He received his Ph.D. in engineering from the Department of BIN Fusion Engineering, Chonbuk National University under the prestigious Brain Korea (BK21) Fellowship. So far, he has published about 60 research papers in top-quality international peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Dilshad Hussain works in the field of functional nanomaterials and their applications in textiles, sensing, membranes, and catalysis. His research work is focused on Metal-Organic Frameworks, Metal/Metal Oxide composites, Carbon Nanomaterials, Polymeric Materials, Quantum Dots, and Anisotropic Gold Nanoparticles. Dr. Dilshad’s group research projects include multifunctional textiles, nano-functionalized membranes for environmental applications, and smartphone-assisted portable sensors. He has published more than 100 research papers in high-impact factor international journals with an accumulative Impact Factor above 500. He has also received two national research awards (Best Research Paper Award from HEC Pakistan and Research Productivity Award from Pakistan Council for Science and Technology Pakistan).

Prof. David Hughes is a professor of low carbon materials and the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation within the Department of Engineering and has worked at the University since 2013. Prior to joining Teesside University David worked as a design and development technician in the polymer industry winning the Society of Polymer Engineers national award in 2008. David works closely with local trusts and industries. David is the Chair of the national IOM3 Polymer Group and sits on a number of government steering groups related to plastics. He coordinates the University Circular Economy and Recycling Innovation Centre (CERIC) with TWI.
