Lu Yang: DOKU: DOKU: DOKU: samsara.exe
Lu Yang’s exhibition 'DOKU: DOKU: DOKU: samsara.exe' offered visitors an encounter with an artist whose vision moves fluently between spiritual inquiry and the evolving languages of digital culture. Using motion capture, gaming engines, and virtual
avatars to explore questions of identity, embodiment, and reincarnation, Lu Yang’s work proposes that contemporary technologies do not merely extend our senses; they reshape the ways we understand selfhood and consciousness. The texts gathered in this publication emerged directly from conversations provoked by the exhibition. 'Avatar Studies: Inquiries into the Digital Medium', held at Amant, convened artists, designers, and theorists whose work unfolds within the many ecosystems of digital creation, from real-time motion capture to independent game development. 'Devotional Circuits', a workshop and public reading presented the following day, invited six writers to respond to Lu Yang’s work by considering technology in relation to ritual, belief, and the body. Both programs’ participants reflected on how virtual spaces intersect with lived experience and how artists are redefining the emotional, philosophical, and material stakes of working digitally.
