Meditation in Psychiatry and General Medicine
This book explores the history of meditation, including from a medical perspective, and describes its significance for the practice of medicine today. The first part of the book explains the concepts of mindfulness and meditation, places meditation in the context of different religious and philosophical traditions, and provides insights into its significance in relation to physiology, psychology, psychoanalysis, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychiatry in general. Many studies have demonstrated the clinical effects of meditation in various diseases, and the second part of the book is devoted to the psychiatric and medical applications of meditation. Current knowledge is presented on the role of meditation in depressive and anxiety disorders, psychosis, and physical illnesses. In addition, the value of meditation in specific age groups, the young and the elderly, is reviewed, and the use and benefits of meditation in the workplace and the community are discussed. Ăśber den Autor
Dr. Jeong-Ho Chae (MD, PhD) graduated from the Catholic University of Korea and currently serves as a Professor of Psychiatry at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, The Catholic University of Korea. He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed international publications and numerous textbooks and scholarly books. As a pioneer of meditation medicine in Korea, Dr. Chae founded the Korean Academy of Meditation in Medicine and currently serves as the Director of the Korean Institute of Education & Research for Meditation in Medicine. Dr. Chae has served as President of multiple professional societies, including the Korean Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the Korean Association of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the Korean Academy of Medicine for Emotion, Cognition and Behavior, the Korean Academy of Anxiety and Mood, and the Korean Society of Occupational Stress. In recognition of his academic and clinical contributions, he has received numerous awards, including the Prime Minister’s Commendation and the Academic Excellence Award from the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association.
