Right-wing parties have gained popularity at European level over the last 45 years: A steep rise of far-right parties can be observed in the elections to the European Parliament from 1979 to 2024. The analysis covers the exact course of the dramatic right-wing development, the results of the far-right and right-wing conservative parties in the individual elections, in particular the number, strength, state of origin and ideology of the successful parties. The author identifies global causes for the right-wing trend and discusses the potential of these parties to disrupt democracy and the unification of Europe.
