Off the cuff. In the days when couriers had to travel by horse, it was often not worth getting off the horse to deliver a short message. If people had questions about a message, such a messenger would answer off the cuff, without thinking too much, from his high horse, usually spontaneously and without thinking. Without taking the time to arduously dismount, the answer from the stirrup only reached the listeners incompletely. In our day and age, speakers “off the cuff” usually do not give plausible answers to the most important questions of our era. However, saying something without preparation can sometimes hit the mark. Improvisation is a strategy used by many politicians. Before they say nothing with long, complex sentences, they usually counter with a brief counter-question so as not to have to answer unpleasant questions. They skillfully make vague statements from the gut. Off the cuff, without batting an eyelid, we even accept their statement and agree. Not everyone has the gift of selling important things so succinctly. As early as the 17th century, intellectuals in their circles practiced presenting rhymes without thinking for long. Goethe once said: “How easy it is to make rhymes off the cuff.” Lessing went one step further when he claimed: “Every great genius speaks everything off the cuff.” That is why rhetorically trained speakers who give a speech “off the cuff” are admired by many listeners.
