Vom späten 4. bis zum 7. Jahrhundert war das oströmische Kaisertum in Konstantinopel immobilisiert. Die ständige Anwesenheit der Kaiser machte Veränderungen ihres Kommunikationsverhaltens unvermeidlich. Ihre lokale Gebundenheit befeuerte die Bedeutung und Entwicklung der rituellen Ausgestaltung von Herrschaft, die zuvor schon eine zunehmende Rolle gespielt hatte. In Konstantinopel konnten sich die Kaiser der performativen Kommunikation mit Gruppen des Reichs, die ihre Herrschaft stützten und auf deren Akzeptanz sie angewiesen waren, nämlich nicht entziehen. Das Medium dieser Kommunikation waren die höfischen Zeremonien.

Christian Rollinger untersucht das Hofzeremoniell der Spätantike als eine Bündelung sinn- und machtkonstituierender Rituale, in denen sich die wesentlichen Ideologeme des spätantiken Kaisertums spiegelten und die ihnen Inhalt und Leben verliehen. Zeremoniell und Herrschaft waren untrennbar miteinander verbunden. Der Autor zeigt durch eine systematische und umfassende Untersuchung, dass Zeremoniell nicht allein Ausdruck, sondern auch Gestaltung, nicht nur autoritative monarchische Repräsentation, sondern ebenso performative Konstruktion des spätantiken Kaisertums war.

This study is the first comprehensive treatment of the provincial allocations system in the late Roman Republic, between the provincial law carried by Gaius Gracchus in 123 BCE and that carried by Pompeius Magnus in 52 BCE. It considers the actual process of allocations, from the Senate's decree of consular and praetorian provinces through to the transfer of command on the ground. Different chapters address the system of allotment (sortitio), the authorisation of troops and funds (ornatio), and the ritual prerequisites for departure, all based solidly on the surviving evidence. An appendix recording the Senate's year-by-year decisions supports this and allows us to see trends in the data.

Since provincial questions were of central importance to the senatorial class, they were the source of many of the political contests which dominate our source record. And at every stage, the institutions shaped the politics. A new picture emerges, of structural conflicts revolving around the relationship between consuls and tribunes. As Rafferty argues, this made the provincial allocations system one of the central causes of Rome's growing political dysfunction in the late Republic.

Cet ouvrage comble une lacune historiographique et présente une nouvelle approche de l'impérialisme romain à l'époque républicaine en s'interrogeant sur la place qu'occupent les déplacements de communautés organisés par Rome dans la construction de son hégémonie en Italie et dans la péninsule ibérique. L'enquête confronte de manière critique les témoignages textuels aux réalités archéologiques afin d'établir un inventaire raisonné des déplacements, classés en deux categories : les déplacements de communautés à l'intérieur de leur propre territoire (deducti) et les déplacements de communautés en dehors de leur territoire (traducti). Elle met aussi en lumière le rôle des déplacements de communautés en tant que double instrument de déracinement et d'intégration au service de Rome dans sa gestion des conflits, à travers une analyse comparative de la manière dont les déplacements sont présentés par les auteurs gréco-latins, du contexte et des conditions dans lesquelles ils eurent lieu, des objectifs visés par les Romains et des conséquences pour les communautés déplacées.
