China maintains a network of close political and economic relations to almost all countries in Africa. The author examines important areas of cooperation from trade and investments to security issues, and analyses incentives and risks for both China and its African partners. He thus reveals a complexity in China-Africa relations that goes far beyond simplifying labels such as “developmental partnership” or “neo-colonialism”.

For decades, Turkish foreign policy was guided by the foundational Kemalist principles ‘Peace at Home, Peace in the World’. With the emergence of new regional security challenges resulting from the Arab uprisings between 2010-2011, there appears to be a significant shift in this outlook. In putting the Turkish military interventions in Iraq, Syria and Libya into this context, they can be understood as indications of a new Turkish foreign policy.

Will the Corona-crisis strenghten or weaken international law? This volume seeks to answer that question, by analysing topics such as closed borders and vaccination-nationalism, but also international solidarity and cooperation as part of global governance. The
role of international law with redards to defeating the pandemic and its ability to influence decision-makers will be questioned. The question of whether a global pandemic treaty would be an adequate solution will be treated in this volume as well.

Does the Common Security and Defence Policy with the Strategic Compass have an adequate framework to ensure the security of the EU and its citizens? In his analysis, Rastislav Báchora points out some unknown but crucial security policy variables with regard to US foreign policy that may affect Europe's security in the future. The volume thus provides a fundamental but also topical positioning of the EU as a rational actor in geopolitical contexts.

Over the years, representatives of the Athens and Sparta schools of thought in the Bundeswehr have been engaged in a controversy over the meaning and further development of Innere Führung. While Innere Führung in the Athenian sense was initially still defined by the "army in democracy" and the "citizen in uniform", the Bundeswehr's combat experiences in Afghanistan led to a shift towards Sparta. Sparta stands for an army capable of war with a special morality for the soldier, who is understood almost exclusively as a fighter. The recent turn of events triggered by the war in Ukraine has made Sparta acceptable right up to the top echelons of the Bundeswehr.

Nigeria ist einer der einflussreichsten Akteure in Afrika. Das Land agiert als wichtiger Player in den internationalen Beziehungen und tritt als regionale Führungsmacht in der Westafrikanischen Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft (ECOWAS) auf.
