The Blood of the Luisenstollen
A Styrian Crime Thriller
THE BLOOD OF THE LUISENSTOLLEN
A Styrian Crime Novel
November 1958. Fog lies thick over the hills of Oberdorf near Weiz. Ten-year-old Friedl Rauch slips into a tunnel that should not exist: an illegal seam the miners call only “the Black One”. That evening a hand lights the fuse and the mountain closes. For three days a knocking comes from beneath the rubble. Tock. Tock. Tock. No one answers.
November 2026. A boy is found dead on an old spoil heap, a lump of brown coal pressed into his hand. He is the third this year. Each boy vanished for exactly nine days, and each was found at an abandoned mine. Scratched into the back of every piece of coal are a cross and a number: 58.
Chief Inspector Thomas Reiterer of the Styrian State Criminal Police grew up here, at his grandfather's side, on those very spoil heaps. Now the British tabloids are calling the killer “The Coal Man” and the town is filling with camera crews. Then Thomas's own nephew Lukas disappears, and the clock starts running towards one date: 21 November, the anniversary of the day the mountain was sealed.
The trail leads back through the old miners' cooperative, its shift book, its silence and its families. Somewhere under the apple orchards and the concrete lies a story a whole village agreed to forget. And deep below the surface, someone is knocking again.
A dark, atmospheric thriller about guilt passed down through generations, a crime that was never solved, and a race against time beneath the Styrian hills. Inspired by the real history of lignite mining around Weiz.
