Informational Entrepreneurship in a World with Limited Insight

This book organizes entrepreneurship theory in a way that constitutes a new body of knowledge, which is Informational Entrepreneurship.  It can serve as a basis for teaching entrepreneurship and reducing performance uncertainty.  Although entrepreneurship is not entirely about information, information determines how it can be systematically understood while depending less on luck.  It also offers the only known, experimentally tested approach that incorporates decision support tools.  Other known approaches rely on exposition for validation; whereas, Informational Entrepreneurship uses two-sample experiments that controlled for other explanations as well as experimenter bias.  It will appeal to those studying and teaching entrepreneurship who are looking for a prescriptive approach, rather than a descriptive approach.

Value Creation for Owners and Directors

This book deals with a much understudied and poorly understood aspect of business: the role of owners and boards in value creation. While there is abundant guidance on value creation for publicly listed firms and their managers, the role played by owners, and their corporate directors, in value creation and governance has been overlooked. This book aims to fill that gap.

• The first part deals with the mission, and the values and rules pertaining to the governance of the business. These structural elements are fundamental for owners to get right as they pave the way to value creation, or its opposite. They refer to “WHAT” owners have to do. Another element is the formation of the three boards that govern owner-led firms: the owners board, the board of directors, and the management board.
• The second part addresses the relational elements that owners must master to effectively manage the social and emotionaldynamics in their enterprise. It deals with the “HOW” of ownership, namely the leadership process that lies at the heart of board work. This process ensures alignment across the three boards and also with stakeholders that is vital to realizing owners’ value creating aims.
• Thirdly, the book explores the histories, defining experiences, and talents that define owners and shape their enterprise. It concerns the “WHOM,” namely the identities of owners. It explores the diversity of ownership styles and identifies the critical personal transitions owners must make in their leadership quest.
This book offers a practical guide for business aiming for value creation. It also should be of interest to directors and executives of all firms with identifiable ownership, such as entrepreneurial, family, state-owned and private equity firms.

Work, Politics and the Green Industrial Revolution

In 2020, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson launched The Green Jobs Taskforce, which extended and articulated the green jobs policy of his government and its position within conservative political ideology. This book critically highlights gaps in the political and business decision-making of his Taskforce, most notably on: the limited role of employers and HRM associations in skills building for staff in non-polluter industries (solar and wind); issues of a fair and just transition for workers losing jobs in the polluter industries (fossil fuels); and the lack of employee voice in both work arenas. The overtly pro-conservative and political nature of this UK Taskforce is also analyzed, which occurs and operates in opposition to British trade unions and the wider labor movement, by not prioritizing the just transition, alongside the extensive skills, training and passporting requirements that British workers need to gain decent, green jobs.

This book is distinctive in offering the first in-depth analysis and critique of the UK Green Jobs Taskforce, in examining this Taskforce using conservative political ideas, and by critiquing it too. Little academic literature is available globally on the business impact and analysis of UK governmental sustainability policy, and this study can provide wider learning points, lessons and implications for other green job plans being formed and enacted in the EU, USA and other countries. It will be of great interest to academics and students of sustainability, HRM, organizational behavior, organization studies and employment relations.

Artificial Intelligence and the New World Order

This book discusses the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) on post-COVID-19 international relations. With the decline and fall of U.S. global leadership and the emergence of new powerful actors, as hastened by the global pandemic, new arms are now used in new forms of wars with new players. The balance of power swings between geostrategic interests and those linked to the global governance of virtual space and the race to technological sovereignty. Chapters focus on the challenges imposed by these changes on different parts of the international system—law, governance, diplomacy, international psychological security—and articulate new strategies and ethical policies as possible solutions. The volume is interdisciplinary and will appeal to researchers, students, and professionals across fields interested in the ethics of AI in the international system.

Improving Consistency in Performance Measurement System Design

This book analyzes behavioral distortions in public schools and delineates outcome-based performance measurement systems that can prevent and mitigate them. An instrumental view of dynamic performance management (DPM) is used to support the endeavor by identifying how performance drivers affect end results of outcome and output, how end results affect strategic resources, and how strategic resources and benchmarks define the dynamics of performance drivers. This approach is also used to promote a shift from an output-oriented to an outcome-oriented view in performance management, with the aim of achieving sustainable results in the long term. The book also includes a comprehensive literature review at the end of each chapter, intended to strengthen readers’ knowledge and encourage further research.

Given its scope, the book will appeal to graduate students in public management, researchers in performance management, system dynamics, and education, and decision-makers in public schools.
