The Voice on the Other End
Some truths cannot be put away.
Elisa knows how to listen. Night after night, she answers calls from strangers, offering a calm voice to people whose fears, loneliness, and grief have become too heavy to carry alone. She has learned to leave room for silence, to hear what remains unspoken, and to accept that she cannot save everyone.
Then a woman calls who knows things no stranger should know.
Her voice is quiet. Her words are precise. She speaks of death, of a forgotten street, and of a door Elisa must find inside a house that has stood empty for years. The conversation should end when Elisa puts down the receiver. Instead, it follows her home.
At 11:17 p.m., a photograph appears on her phone. A red coat. An unfamiliar girl. And Elisa herself.
As details from the caller’s warnings begin to surface in her everyday life, Elisa searches for an explanation. Her questions lead her back to an accident she can barely remember, to missing recordings, and to people whose accounts of the past refuse to fit together. Familiar gestures take on troubling meanings. The reassurance of those closest to her begins to sound rehearsed. Even her own memories offer little certainty.
The deeper she ventures into the mystery, the harder it becomes to distinguish an act of protection from an attempt to control her. Someone has decided which parts of her history she is allowed to know. Someone has kept other voices out of reach. And behind a door that should lead to an empty room, a child is knocking.
But Elisa’s search reaches beyond the question of what happened. It forces her to confront the bonds between people who have hurt one another, the silence that can grow inside a family, and the longing to be believed after years of being told that one’s memories are wrong. Listening has always been her way of helping. Now she must discover when to answer, whom to trust, and where another person’s demands end and her own choices begin.
