Under the Glass Moon
12 Seconds. Who Will Be Gone This Time?
In Lumen, twelve seconds are enough for a person to disappear. Twelve seconds beneath the full moon, when the city seems to hold its breath, clocks fall silent, movement freezes, and reality briefly abandons the rules everyone thought they understood. The adults have explanations for it. They speak of atmospheric disturbances, altered perception, and a phenomenon that science may one day understand. The children of Lumen tell a different story: during those twelve seconds, the city takes people. And sometimes it does not merely take a person. It takes the memory that the person ever existed.
Seventeen-year-old Livia has spent years refusing to believe stories like that. She trusts what can be proven because doubt feels safer than asking questions whose answers might change everything. But then her thirteen-year-old brother Elias begins talking about a girl who, he insists, once lived with their family. A child with red shoes. He remembers her cup, marks on a doorframe, a room that somehow feels wrong, and traces of a life their mother, Miira, insists never existed. Yet the more Elias asks, the more obvious it becomes that Miira's silence does not resemble ignorance. It resembles fear.
Then the full moon comes.
On an old bridge, the world stops for twelve seconds. The river freezes. A bell stroke breaks off in the middle of its sound. And before Livia's eyes, Elias begins to disappear. His hand turns transparent, Livia's fingers pass through him, and when time begins moving again, all that remains on the stones is an old brass key tied with a faded red ribbon. Elias is gone. But the most frightening part begins afterward, when the world itself seems willing to adjust to his absence........................
