This book addresses the complex issues that arise in school-university collaborative action research projects. Employing sociocultural perspectives on examining professional practices of in-service teachers, it examines the complexities of negotiating beliefs, identities and interpersonal relations when educators from two different institutional cultures collaborate. Specifically, the book explores issues such as the discourses that are operative in school-university collaboration for English language teacher education; the way in which beliefs, interpersonal relations and identities are negotiated in school-university partnership; what tensions and complexities operate in collaborative action research discourse in an educational context; and how school-university collaboration can be achieved. Teacher Education for Critical and Reflexive Interculturality

This book deals with the importance of interculturality in teacher education and training. It is mostly through the concept of intercultural competence that interculturality has been constructed and problematized for educators. However, different approaches and paradigms are available and differ and/or share similarities in terms of ideology, method, practice, theoretical frameworks, and ethical considerations. There is no global agreement on the meanings of interculturality in teacher education and training, although some principles might be common across national borders. There is thus a need for educators to consider these aspects of interculturality in education to be able to become better teachers in a diverse world like ours.

Historically, coal was one of Britain’s major industries, employing over a million men at its peak. But mining was more than an occupation - it was a way of life for those living and working in coalfield communities. Work, leisure, family relations and other dimensions of social life were centred upon the coal industry and its related institutions such as trade unions, working-men’s clubs and welfare institutes. These communities have, however, undergone significant social and economic change over time, not least in terms of the pain and suffering associated with the Great Strike of 1984–85, the successive waves of pit closures which took place thereafter and the eventual demise of the coal industry. The book will be of interest to academics drawing on sociology, social policy, history, geography and other subject disciplines.

Neoliberalism and Islamophobia

This book explores the ways in which dynamics of Islamophobia and neoliberalism shape the schooling experiences of minority Muslim students in Sydney primary, public and independent schools. The author examines the issues at macro, meso and micro level.

At the global systemic level, the book discusses the politics of naming Muslims and racialised governmentality within a capitalist neoliberal context. At the institutional level, it provides an insight into the Living Safe Together policy and explains how it can potentially provide space for teachers to abuse their authority or power in schools over minority Muslim students, within a wider discursive context shrouded by national security discourses, ‘homegrown’ terrorism and deradicalisation. Finally, at the individual level, drawing on the voices of teachers and Muslim students, the book highlights how Islamophobic discourse was reinforced through pedagogical practices, and how Muslim students resisted these discoursesby speaking back to power.

This open access book challenges international policy ‘groupthink’ about lifelong learning. Adult learning – too long a servant of business competitiveness – should be reimagined as central to democratic society. Young adults, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, engage more in education and training, and learn more day-to-day at work, if provision is democratically organised and based on enduring and inclusive institutional networks, and when jobs encourage and reward the acquisition of skills. Using innovative qualitative and quantitative methods, the contributors develop a critical perspective on dominant policies, investigating – across the European Union and Australia – how ‘vulnerable’ young adults experience programmes designed to improve their ‘employability’, and how ‘skills for jobs’ policies squeeze out wider – and wiser – ideas of what education and training should do. Chapters show why some provision works for those with poor educational backgrounds, why labour market and educational institutions matter so much, how adult education can empower and expand people’s agency, and the challenges of using artificial intelligence in lifelong learning policy-making. Several investigate the pivotal role of workplace learning in organisational life, and in learning during ‘emerging adulthood’. Important comparative studies of workplace learning in the metals, retail and adult education sectors show the role of management, trade unions and social movements in young adults’ learning.

Understanding Communities of School Leadership

This book examines the evolution of schooling from bureaucracy and hierarchy to post-industrial schools, and places teachers’ leadership on center stage at the same time. Communities of schooling is one of the three most critical developments in education in the last 140 years. When it is linked with the two other fundamental reorientations in schooling - “dispersed ownership” and “constructivist work” - it becomes the most powerful force in education since the 1700s.  This book shows how communities of schooling replace the earlier pillars of “learning as telling,” “hierarchy of control,” and “non-democratic influence.” 

The work also explains the meaning and understanding of school work as a social influence process where all school-based educators exert power, but at different levels. The idea of enhancing individual and collective capacity through interdependency, shared work, and collective responsibility is unpacked.

This book addresses the topic of online information for everyday personal and professional use by students, graduates, and young professionals. It focuses on the development of the job-related use of online information by young professionals in their practical phases of education (traineeship/practical year) in the domains of law, teaching, and medicine.
 The research conducted in this context investigates the general and domain-specific use of online resources in educational contexts and examines the effectiveness of an innovative digital training approach in enhancing skills required for the competent use of online information. For this purpose, the presented research uses a yet unprecedented approach of data triangulation, in which self-rated data, digitally and in vivo assessed response process data and expert ratings are integrated into a theoretically founded assessment framework and are examined from various interdisciplinary perspectives with different analysis methods.
Overall, this work addresses key research questions related to the use of online information in practical tasks as well as to the impact of digital training. It provides in-depth multidisciplinary analyses of multimodal processes and performance data, allowing implications equally relevant for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers in the field of education.

Glacier stories speaking through photographs, prose, poetry, and provocations.  Collectively, the gathering of experiences in this book explores what it means to be human and more-than-human in the context of glacial melt and shifting loss. What is means to be changing our planet and, all the time, changing ourselves. Wilding ecologies emerges in the book, as a means to disrupt these anthropocentric ways of knowing, and by showing up, being affected, we can reawaken a newfound love and enchantment.

The Politics of Environmental Education Centres

This book juxtaposes a representation of environmental education centres around the globe with centres within the New South Wales Department of Education in Australia. A number of features of the contemporary period are preventing people from exercising their citizenship: the acceleration and permanent change in the conditions shaping habitability of planet Earth, the digital and techno-scientific revolution, the rise of religious and political radicalisation, the explosion of social inequalities, the hegemony of the economic drive to maximise individual interests, etc. For many individuals, citizenship appears to be prevented at the first hurdle. What is more, though officially or legally, it is not possible to speak of second-class citizenship-- so what can be done when the actors themselves use such terminology? There is something essential here which must be taken into account as a basis for thinking about the social, its inequalities and its injustices. The authors of this book propose the notion of 'second-class citizenship' as a way of thinking about the scale of contemporary social and political inequalities. In view of this observation, the contributors outline a movement based on the conviction that education is the repository of the power to prepare for the future. How can we learn to build a shared world together and overcome the obstacles that prevent us from doing so? How can we learn new habits of relationships marked by responsibility and hospitality? The collective reflection in this book lends credence to the way in which players talk about their experience, even experiencing differences in their ability to participate in the mechanisms of power. The First Year at School: An International Perspective

This book explores an under-researched but vital part of education: the first year at primary/elementary school. The work shows that children’s progress varies enormously from school to school, class to class and child to child. This variation is important because the more progress that children make in that first year of school, the higher their academic attainment at the end of compulsory schooling.

The iPIPS (international Performance Indicators in Primary Schools) project, upon which this book is based, has been able to provide deeper insights into some of the key issues within and across different contexts whilst highlighting new and some ongoing issues. Despite all the work there remain unanswered or new puzzling issues which are also explored.

 

We need to know how to improve the education at that stage and, more broadly, we need greater clarity about when children should be taught to read and be introduced to formal arithmetic, in other words, when they should start school.  We also need to be clearer about whether, when and how young children should be assessed. The book will suggest some answers but it will raise important questions and dilemmas for which we do not, as yet, have answers.
